Brandt:

  1. The top annotation is a connection to our previous study of Discourses. Discourses, like literacy skills, are typically influenced by economic status.
  2. The second annotation is an extension. Not only do the writings of ordinary citizens help us understand how they would “cope with life as they find it”, but they also teach us a lot about historical time periods.
  3. This is a predictive annotation. Sponsors are looking to get something in return for their time and efforts, so I knew that a literacy sponsor wasn’t necessarily teaching literacy for the sake of unbiased learning.

  1. The left annotation is a challenging annotation. Literacy narratives are described as a good way to develop identities, but I think that a lot of the identities are just made up to impress the teacher. This was mentioned later on in the work.
  2. The right annotation is an understanding/connection. It makes sense that students are able to connect their work to others because that’s what a lot of undergrad English classes are about: drawing connections.
  3. This is a questioning annotation. Is this activity helpful for “hero” narratives or just victims?

Alexander

  1. The top annotation is challenging. I don’t think that literacy has ever “disempowered” people; lack of literacy disempowers people.
  2. The bottom annotation is also challenging. This argument seems like a logical fallacy.
  3. This is an annotation for understanding. Hero narratives are a type of literacy-as-success narrative that provides a specific event.
