Document Work (MLA)

Document Work (MLA)

My Discourse essay was written in MLA format. This was a challenge when I made my works cited page because different sources had to be cited differently. For example, James Gee and June Jordan were both published in journals, but Lisa Delpit was published in an edited anthology. In the past, I’ve always used online citation makers but doing this myself was a learning experience. I had to learn how to do hanging indentations, which are more difficult than I thought. This is an example of an edited anthology citation:

Like all MLA papers, our Discourse essays needed parenthetical citations to give proper credit to authors. I had never used them before, but I found that they actually made it easier to find quotes in the text if I wanted to shift my sentences around.  This is an example of a parenthetical citation in the final draft of my Discourse essay: At the time, she found that reverting to her primary Discourse was limiting. But the students and teachers reading her poetry would go so far as to “encourage her to write more” in this “voice” (Delpit 551).
